Magyar League: Hannah (was) in Hungary

The original purpose of this blog was to post updates as I made my way in the Land of the Magyars.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on when and how you ask me, I have returned from a truly fantastic semester. I'm currently re-adjusting--going from Bathory utca back to West Broadway takes some getting used to.

You will notice that there is no GRAND FINALE post that captures all of my sentiments about BP and my time there. The main reason for this is that every time I have tried to sum up studying abroad, my words have devolved into the most trite sound bites...perhaps some things are better left unsaid. OR this is just a cop out...

Either way, prepare for a barrage of random posts and "region-related" musings...hopefully it won't be long before I am writing about Budapest again.

Below, you will find the old description for this tumblr, which I've decided to leave intact, at least for the moment because it represents a specific and important moment in time- hastily written while sitting on my bed in my house in Seattle for the last time ( procrastinating packing and saying my goodbyes, as per usual).

Here you’ll find bits and pieces of my grand European adventure. I am spending my semester abroad from Barnard College and NYC in Budapest, Hungary: trading Broadway for Bathory utca and three months of frolicking in a land whose national treasures are not limited to paprika and poppyseeds.

I will be studying through a joint program with Bard College in New York and Central European University. I will study at Central European University in the History department.

I shied away from the typical blog set up because after years of trying to keep a diary, I have learned that painstakingly recording my thoughts and ideas about my daily life in the moment isn’t natural or enjoyable for me. I have enough half filled decorative notebooks growing dusty on my bookshelves –from silk covered and green sequined diaries to mini notebooks emblazoned with Hello Kitty and marked with my initials in a fierce grade school cursive.

My philosophy for keeping record of my days in the land of the Magyars is to record both the beautiful and the banal –lest too much of the former render it the latter. THEREFORE, sometimes I’ll write a great deal about what I’ve seen, who I’ve met, and perhaps what I’ve eaten (!) but often I’ll just upload images—hopefully, some of my own once I get my camera up and running.

SO consider the posts to come juicy morsels. of a giant batch of hearty Hungarian gyulas. How do you like that for an overblown working metaphor? The gyulas= my study abroad experience....and you, dear friends and family, consider yourselves the taste tester!
